Lest we forget !!
Set in the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in the near future - December 2027 - 'Kaala Paani' deals with the outbreak of a mysterious and deadly epidemic. The narrative moves back and forth in time. It goes back to the Japanese occupation of the islands in1943 during World War II and further back to portray the resilient indigenous tribes who have lived in this region for centuries.
The survival thriller ambitiously explores themes of social stigma and identity, environmental exploitation, bureaucratic corruption and the harmonious relationship of the indigenous Orakas with nature which renders them immune to the dreaded disease LHF-27. A desperate effort for survival and a race to find a remedy forms the background of tales of love, loss and despair ... designed to parallel the horrors of Covid-19 pandemic.
The script is rich in metaphors. The title refers to the Cellular Jail in Port Blair where freedom fighters were incarcerated in the colonial-era, just as the island is 'locked-down' by the administration and becomes a veritable prison !!
