I wonder, how it could have occurred to man to divide the cosmos, on the analogy of summer and winter, day and night and into a bright day-world and a dark night-world ? The answer, I believe is, because he has the prototype of such a division in himself, in the polarity between the conscious and the unconscious ... the light and the dark !

It is that time of the year when it is so easy to believe that we can put the past behind us and start afresh … it’s the time for New Year resolutions ! Whether it is kicking a bad habit or starting a good one, it is basic human nature to want to have a few more days of indulgence and push all changes to the New Year. It is as if the first day of the new year has some magical power which will change us into better, or fitter or better looking human beings !!! Even beyond the personal, as one year ends and another begins, there is always an air of anticipation.

I hardly make New Year resolutions … rather I make it a point to do something that I don’t do usually on the New Year’s Day. This year I was delightfully surprised to find advertisement campaign of ‘Fashion & I” offering helpful suggestions. “Do everything you haven’t done in a long time” stated the tag line and the suggestions were … treat yourself, play dumb charades, call a school friend, write a love letter, sing a nursery rhyme, speak to a stranger ... in a word make 2010 special ... I made my New Year special ... I did three of the things listed above !!!

This year has been particularly rough for many and I imagine there will be many who are looking forward to better, brighter days. Perhaps it is the inherent belief in change that makes the end of the year magical. It brings hope that things can change overnight, when the clock strikes midnight and a new year begins …
